Marvin (1823-1877) was a Missouri-born Bishop of the Methodist Church South who was commissioned by his Church in 1874 to tour the world, visiting Methodist mission fields and reporting on the state of the missions. This fascinating book is the narrative of his journey, filled with information about Japan, China, Singapore, Ceylon, Egypt, and Palestine in the 1870s.
