Pair of Vintage Egyptian Art on Papyrus. Framed 9" x 11". The attention to detail is truly remarkable illustrating the beauty of ancient Egyptian art. One image shows the Weighing of the Heart ceremony from the Book of the Dead, an ancient Egyptian funerary text. It depicts the judgement of the deceased in the afterlife. Anubis, the jackal-headed god of embalming and the dead, is shown weighing the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice. If the heart is lighter than the feather, the deceased is allowed to pass into the afterlife. If the heart is heavy with sin, it is devoured by Ammit, a creature with the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion, and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. This scene is a common motif in ancient Egyptian art. The seated figure in the second piece of art is possibly Osiris, a god of the afterlife wearing a distinctive crown and holding a scepter attended by two female and a male figure offering gifts.
